Weigh in on Light Rail Revamps

The SLC Planning Division is studying ways to revamp stops along the University line. There will be a public outreach evening on May 19 to collect thoughts and opinions about various types of housing, retail, and accessibility projects. This is a great opportunity to weigh in on how to make the most of our light rail.

The Salt Lake City Planning Division recently began a project to study potential changes to the 4th South transit corridor. The goal of the project is to create station area plans and zoning standards for three stations stops along the University TRAX line. The three stations that will be evaluated include the Library, Trolley and 900 East stops.

The scope of the project is to address the following: identify redevelopment opportunities; promote the construction of new affordable housing; provide people with choices in the mode of transportation; choices in housing location and type; access to employment centers; and to assist in implementing the Citys goals towards becoming a more livable city.

In conjunction with the project, the City has received a grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to assist with the public outreach process. Part of the requirement is for us to reach out to individuals from traditionally under-represented groups. Our hope is that we will get several participants to provide their input regarding the study area.

We would like to invite you to attend our first community workshop on May 19. The workshop will be held from 6pm to 8pm at the Main Library in the 4th Floor Conference Room. Attached is a flyer that can be printed out and posted within the community. In addition, if you maintain a distribution list as part of your business or service agency, we would greatly appreciate if you could send it out to those who may be interested.

Additional information or questions can be directed to Maryann Pickering, 801-535-7660 or maryann.pickering@slcgov.com

Unveiling of the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) Report for Utah

WHAT: The release of a new GPI study for Utah
WHEN: Wednesday, January 19, 2010 – 11:00 AM
WHERE: Salt Lake City Main Library, 4th floor meeting room
WHO: Study authors Erica Gaddis PhD (SWCA Environmental Consultants) and Günseli Berik, PhD (Professor of Economics, University of Utah) will present the findings.
Be the first to learn about a new measure for quality of life in Utah -- Wednesday, January 19th at the Salt Lake City Library. The first study of its kind in the intermountain west, this GPI study is full of insights for better policy making in Utah.
Is Utah making genuine progress?
Unlike the gross domestic product (GDP), which only measures economic transactions, the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), puts a dollar value on critical quality of life factors, such as volunteer labor, air quality, and low crime. By measuring these factors, we can get a better picture of Utah’s well-being and our true progress. Utah is now the first state in the intermountain west to have a GPI study.
Loaded with insights into what’s important for the future of Utah, this study will help us prioritize our resources and make better policy decisions on a statewide and local level.
RSVP is encouraged. To RSVP or for more information contact Wayne Martinson: wmartinson@xmission.com
EPA slaps Utah energy company

"The added controls will mean a reduction of about 427 tons of volatile organic compounds and hazardous air pollutants per year, the EPA said. The pollutants are key factors in the creation of ozone, which has emerged as a problem so serious in the Uinta Basin that monitoring last year showed the area was one of the nation’s worst for ozone pollution."

Customer of Division of Air Quality survey

If you haven't already, fill out the concerned citizen survey about DAQ's
permitting performance.

This is our opportunity to say all people that breathe are customers of
the permitting process. We need permits that use the full authority of
federal & state rules to require that all industry permits have the
strictest possible limits.

Don't be intimidated
Just answer question #1 so you can get to page 2 and use a dialogue box
to say what you want as a customer of DAQ permitting. If you have an
industrial neighbor, explain how you, as a customer of DAQ, feel about your local air quality and what you, as a customer expect.
